At-home Solutions for Common Minor Issues
01
Mouth irritation
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and place orthodontic wax over the area causing irritation. If it continues to bother you, please let our office know so we can help.
02
Lost or Damaged Aligner
If your aligner is lost or damaged, we never want you to go without wearing your aligners. Don’t worry—it happens! Try the next set of aligners to see if they fit. If they fit properly, wear them for one full week before taking your next scans. Please let our office know so we can update your records and ensure your treatment stays on track.
03
Loose or Damaged Bracket
Occasionally a bracket gets loose or damaged. In that case, cover the bracket with wax. If it detaches completely, don’t worry. Either way, call our office to schedule a repair.
Loose brackets
If the bracket or band is still attached to the wire: leave it in place and put orthodontic wax on it (if needed) for added comfort.
If the band or spring is detached from the wire: please contact us for your next appointment.
*Please call us and leave a message about this concern to ensure adequate appointment time for repair.
Lost aligners
If you lose an aligner, or accidentally throw one away, don’t panic. You can simply move to your next upper and lower aligner in your series as outlined by one of our doctors.
Please call and inform the office when you have done this so we can update your records.
Poking Wires
Using a pencil eraser, push the poking wire down (away from your gums or lips). You may also put some orthodontic wax on top of it to prevent rubbing or irritation before your next appointment.
General soreness
It’s normal to feel slight tenderness in your teeth after adjustment or fitting appointments. This should only last for three to five days. To relieve this, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever or rinse your mouth with saltwater.
Slight irritation
After fitting your appliance, you may experience some irritation on your cheeks, lips, or tongue. This normally only lasts for one to two weeks until your mouth adjusts to your braces. Simply put wax on your braces to lessen the friction.
Additional emergency care
While there are steps you can take to temporarily fix or alleviate discomfort and prevent additional damage, we should always be notified. Contact us if you have any concerns.
Our Patients Say It Best

Made my daughter feel comfortable. Increased my anxiety on talk about removing her permanent teeth for braces in 1 -2 years, however. I'm hopeful this isn't the only option.
Thank you
